At Animas High School we have a special thing called link. For three weeks towards the end of the year our juniors take on an internship at a business of their choice (once accepted by the business).
Over the months before Link I had fallen into a rather sharp depression. This resulted in me putting looking for a Link on the back burner while keeping my mental homeostasis was priority number one. When link was only about a week away I decided to ask Janae for help finding a link in techknowledgey and she knew just the guy. She told me about a business in town called E7 Systems and I decided to give them a try. I contacted the boss of the location in town (Alexi) via email and he agreed to take me.
In preparation for link I thought deeply about what would be worth experiencing and I found that I would enjoy being a graphic designer. My mentor wanted me (and anyone who would intern with him) to participate or visit Go Code Colorado. I spent the end of a week (Friday to Sunday) at Go Code. I found that I possess a skill that is very important to business as a whole and that is design. I enjoy working with my client to understand what they want out of the product I have been commissioned for. Business cards, company paraphernalia, and other things that can be mass produced are something I find rather enjoyable.
Going into this experience I was hoping to learn if this would actually be something I enjoyed. I found that design, fabrication and product development are things I would definitely enjoy doing.
I hoped to bring my personal outlook on design.
For my Link I interned at E7 Systems (http://e7systems.com/). There I worked with my mentor Alexi on a prototype for a kombucha auto pour system. I worked with my mentor for two days a week and spent the other three days perusing my own projects, ranging from commissions to personal decorations. E7 Systems is a business that can be hired to create various technological systems for you. From mobile apps to product design E7 Systems can be of assistance. I spent the vast majority of my time at the Maker Lab/Space (near the Power House).
At the start of link I found that my skills in design were useful as they allowed me to vectorize a decal for the kombucha auto pour system.
During link I developed the useful skill of self development. When I needed to learn something new I went to the internet and found how to get it done. A specific of this is I was commissioned to make a wax stamp through 3D printing, I understood the process of 3D printing however I have little to no experience in 3D modeling so I found a program called blender and started learning how I could make my friend’s wax stamp.
I feel that the only shortcoming I had during the three weeks was not knowing how to 3D model a wax stamp. I went through several drafts in my head as to how I could make the wax stamp, but never made the model and printed.
I feel there is no need to argue that E7 should take more high school interns as we are all young adults and are fully capable of working in a professional environment.
Link has helped me for my future by determining that I want to go to college and that I will likely pursue a job in graphic design or computer science.
