Reflection dia de los Muertos
Weston Lewis
The Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos or Days of the Dead is a celebration of those who have passed on and is celebrated the first and second of November. People celebrate by making altars honoring the dead with items that they enjoyed in life and traditional decorations such as sugar skulls, bread of the dead and papel picado. It originated in mexico with the Aztecs, but was altered and combined with Spanish holidays and evolved over time.
For this special day I celebrated one of my childhood heroes; Christopher Lee. I learned lot about him before this project was assigned, but I did learn that one of his first big roles in film was as dracula back when my dad was a kid. Items for the altar were hard to pick out. I never met him so can’t bring say his wedding ring or his lightsaber prop, but I did bring lots of traditional decorations that I am proud of.
The way I feel about this exhibition is apathetic. I was put through a lot of stress to prepare for the event only to have no one visit my altar, considering that this event was held on a wednesday I’m actually surprised that I even got a ride to the event since everyone in my family works on wednesday. Overall I feel that the exhibition was like a science fair from middle school; the only one who cares about your project is your parents who already have seen it, and the teacher who is grading it.
